An introduction

Demands for environmental improvements within construction are growing rapidly from all sides including building designers and their clients – as well as government with its ‘Code for Sustainable Buildings’ and ‘liveability’ initiative which are also expected to take a broad view.

Sustainability’ remains difficult to define or apply quantitative measures to. Various guides are available comparing the ‘embodied impact’ of different materials or constructions – notably the BRE ‘Green Guide to Specification’ – but they recognise that, in many situations, doors have a limited effect on the overall embodied impact of a building, being only a small proportion of the overall mass.

However, the wider environmental characteristics of different door types can be substantial. There are also other issues to consider such as adoption of factory-assembled doorsets to improve environmental efficiency, techniques to maximise
operational design life and, particularly, use of verifiable sustainable timber sources.
